Waiting For Breakup

Adjacent to Alaska’s Anchorage International Airport, Lake Hood is the busiest seaplane base in the world, handling nearly 200 flights a day. In winter when the lake is frozen, aircraft not equipped to operate on the ice are pulled onto land to await the spring thaw, known as “breakup.”
